Resonance: Which do you hold onto?
Share
Sailors,
When someone speaks to you, which resonates more deeply: their negative words or their positive ones?
It has been found that negative information requires more cognitive processing and reflection which makes it sticker in our minds. Those of us who struggle with insecurities and negative self-image, due to social conditioning, are often more inclined to focus on negative feedback. Often, these words are resonated as confirmation of our own self-doubts and fears. Where has this conditioning stemmed from? Mainly from society and our upbringing as whole. If we were raised in environments where criticism was more common than praise, we are more so highly attuned to negative words. Negative words that trigger emotional response within us are far more intense than positives because our brains have been hardwired to pay attention to negativity as a survival mechanism.
I recognize my tendency to focus on negatives. It is a daily practice of mine that I work towards strengthening – shifting my focus to stick on positives. Does anyone have any tips on how you are able to focus more on positives rather than negatives?
Signed,
