Navigating The Waters of Love
Share
Sailors,
I’d love to begin dialogue in The Crum Canoe about the challenges we encounter while navigating the waters of love. Love has brought me the greatest joy and the deepest pain. I'm no expert, but like many of you, I've had my fair share of experience in these waters. There have been times when I've felt alone, especially during the darker seasons of love. I believe it can be empowering to discuss these topics to gain insight into how love may contribute to our hardships so others do not feel as alone as they may.
The Captain and I started dating as teenagers, and now we're approaching our 18-year anniversary. Our relationship has taken time to reach adulthood unlike us who got thrown into it, expected to have all the answers and right moves despite our lack of experience and wisdom. Our love story is not without trials and tribulations. It hasn't always been a smooth sail; we've faced many waves, storms, and growing pains together. Even today, we continue to navigate challenges as they come our way.
Through my experience of loving my best friend from adolescence to adulthood, I've come to believe that love is sustainable through safeguarding the heart by choice. It is waking up each morning and consciously choosing to grow and develop together because the person we love brings us far more fulfillment and joy than anything else ever could.
I firmly believe that love thrives on healthy choices. Love offers countless opportunities to make those choices. Choosing honesty. Choosing loyalty. Choosing to stay committed to each other through challenge. Choosing to prioritize the well-being of both you and your partner. Choosing to develop a deep understanding of one another and ourselves. Choosing to communicate openly and resolve conflict together. Choosing to grow old together, not just physically but through emotional growth and development. Love is the continuous choice to put in the effort to improve. You see, I've learned it's not just about growing old together; it's about the desire, willingness and accountability to grow wiser together.
How do you define love? What do you believe is needed to sustain love?
Signed,
-Just a messy mom in her kitchen.
