Master the Art of Candle Burning

At Crum Canoe Candle Co., we believe a candle is more than just a source of light—it’s a lifestyle experience. Here are some expert tips to ensure you get the most out of your candles, from achieving the perfect burn to creating a beautifully scented atmosphere.

Find the Right Number of Candles for Your Space
To achieve a pleasant and consistent fragrance throw in a room, a good general rule of thumb is 1 ounce of candle wax per 1 square foot of space. This means that for every square foot of room size, you should use about 1 ounce of wax to properly scent the area.

Things to Consider:

  • Fragrance Strength: The type of wax, wick size, and fragrance oil concentration can impact how well a candle scents a room.
  • Room Layout: Open-plan rooms or spaces with high ceilings may require more candles or a larger candle size for even fragrance distribution.
  • Burn Time: The longer a candle burns, the better it can spread fragrance throughout the space.

For an average-sized room (10x10.), a 7oz to 10oz candle will typically provide enough scent throw, though larger candles (16oz+) and/or numerous candles may be necessary for large or open-concept areas.

Trim Your Wick for a Clean Burn
Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to between 1/8 and 1/4 inch. This helps create the proper flame size, which should be between ½ inch to 2 inches, depending on the size of the candle. A steady, controlled flame is key—think smooth and calm, not wild and flickering. Remember to trim the wick each time you relight your candle to keep it burning clean and efficiently. A well-maintained wick is a happy wick!

Remove Top Décor Before Lighting
If your candle comes with decorative elements, such as raw crystals or other adornments, be sure to remove them before lighting the candle. Any decorative top aside from wax embeds is strictly for decoration and must be removed prior to lighting your candle. Use tweezers for careful removal, especially with raw crystals that may have sharp edges. This ensures a safe, even burn and helps avoid any accidents. Your candle deserves a smooth start!

Make Your Candle an Experience
A candle is not just for lighting up a room—it’s an experience to be savored. For the best results, allow your candle to burn long enough for the top layer of wax to melt all the way to the edges (this can take up to 4 hours, depending on the candle). Soy wax has a memory, and if you extinguish your candle before achieving a full melt pool, it may cause tunneling in future burns. Patience pays off!

Safe Candle Burning Practices
To ensure a clean, consistent burn:

  • Always burn your candle on a stable surface, free from debris.
  • Keep your candle away from vents or drafty areas that could affect its burn.
  • Never leave a lit candle unattended - candles should always be monitored while burning.

By following these tips, you’ll ensure your candle lasts longer, burns more evenly, and creates a beautiful, safe atmosphere in your home. Thank you for purchasing from Crum Canoe Candle Co.!
